The Bayou Louise neighborhood, located in North Siesta Key has just so much to love, it’s definitely one of the best places to live in Siesta Key. The Bayou runs from Fishery Point on Sarasota Bay deep into the northern end of Siesta Key, forming a peninsula on the Big Pass side. Accessed only by a bridge on Siesta Drive, the homes here, on Bayou Louise Lane, are very private. At the southern end, the peninsula is very narrow and some homes enjoy access to both the Bay and to the Bayou.
A Home With Private Beachfront Property
This part of Siesta Key is just ten minutes from all the cultural offerings, entertainment and dining options of Downtown Sarasota, but feels a world away. The luxury priced homes here enjoy large lots and lush tropical landscaping provides home owners with loads of privacy. This neighborhood is ideal for boaters because whether you have water access on the Bayou or on the Bay, you will most definitely have a dock and some of the homes with frontage on the Bay also have private beaches.
A Bayou Louise Hidden Gem
Though it’s not widely known, the Bayou Louise neighborhood is home to one of Sarasota’s hidden architectural gems: the Cocoon House. This small structure located at 3575 Bayou Louise Lane is an important piece of Sarasota’s Modernist architectural heritage. Built in 1948 by architects Paul Rudolph and Ralph Twitchell, the Cocoon House served as a guest cottage for the Twitchell family and looks directly out on to the Bayou.
Sarasota Modern On The Bayou
Twitchell is considered one of the founders of the Sarasota School of Architecture and was known for his design of the famous Lido Beach Casino, which was unfortunately demolished in the 1960s. After designing Cocoon House, Paul Randolph would go on to become one of the brightest stars of the modernist movement and many of his buildings can be seen around Sarasota. The house takes its name from the brand name of the material used to form its curved roof and it was designed to take best advantage of the Sarasota climate, including jalousie windows which allow which let the cool gulf breezes pass through the house.
